Base Ten Blocks

Using Base Ten Blocks can be fun! Students took turns making three and four digit numbers.

Can illustrations talk?

Students worked in groups and interacted with illustrations from a story that we had not read. Students used the list of character traits from their Reading Journal to describe what they thought the characters' traits may be.

Regions Map

Take a look at our SC Regions Map. Students have created a map key and color coded their SC Map.

Place Value Mix Up

Place Value Mix Up

Students were given an envelope with a lot of numbers jumbled up. They had to show that they knew  the value of each number. Many of the numbers in the envelope were repeated across place values ex: 2,   20 ,   200,   20,000     The students had to find the correct values and represent the larger number using expanded form. They did a great job with this!

Shniya and Lara have their number figured out using expanded form.

Thomas has his number in expanded form
Brianna and Allie using their math journal to record the answers
Adeline and Adriyana set up their number vertically
Kameran and Avery work together to find the number.

First Day of School!

Today we got settled in and began organizing our journals and STAR folder. We played a few "Get to Know You" games in class and worked on an inquiry/problem solving activity called, "Save Fred". Students worked with a partner to help Fred the worm. Fred's boat had capsized leaving Fred stranded without his life preserver. Students had to help Fred get into his life preserver without touching anything! They could use ONLY the four paperclips to help Fred get into his preserver.

Here are some more photos from our first day of Third Grade:

Welcome Students

Welcome to Mrs. Jones' Class! I am so looking forward to meeting you.
We have many activities planned this year.
Here is a little about me:
I have been teaching for fifteen years. I have two children, Becca (15) and Davis (9). My husband, Buzz, and I have been married for twenty-three years. We live in the heart of Boiling Springs and love our community. Our family is active at Boiling Springs First Baptist Church.
This summer I vacationed at Garden City, S.C. and St. Augustine, Florida. I love playing in the ocean especially riding the waves. I cannot wait to hear about your summer.
See you soon.

Mini Relay for Life

Oakland Elementary students celebrated Relay for Life on Friday, May 16th.
Cancer survivors visited Oakland and walked the Survivor's Lap
Students held banners of encouragement and cheered for the survivors.

Fourth Grade Teacher, Mrs. Stacey Johnson, spoke about her personal journey with cancer and how her friends and family were by her side through it all.

Oakland faculty and staff raised money through various projects to donate to the American Cancer Society.

At the end of the day OES students ended the celebration with a Balloon Release. The balloons represented those who have fought cancer and won and those who have passed on.
The balloons were a beautiful site in the bright blue sky.
