Thomas Won 1st Place!
Thomas was curious about metal detectors and just how far a metal detector could detect certain
metals. He tested gold, cooper, and steel. He hypothesized that steel would be the easiest to
detect because it seemed to have more mass. He conducted three trials at different depths and
found that the steel could be detected at 5 inches. However, the gold and cooper could not be
detected. We think Thomas would make a great Consumer Reporter. Way to go Thomas!!
Allie wanted to know how chicks breathe when they are inside the shell. Does the shell allow air
through it? To test this question, Allie used eggs, water, dish detergent and food coloring. She
found that the food coloring did go through the shells. Her findings were that shells do have
small openings that we can't see with our eyes. These holes allow oxygen to pass through the shell
to the chick inside. Great job Allie!! Thank you for sharing your project and findings with us.
Sam investigated whether a cricket would prefer beef jerky to apples? He used plastic
two liter bottles, tape, beef jerky, apple slices, and live crickets. He observed the crickets
over time and in which side they moved to eat. He hypothesized the crickets would prefer
the beef jerky more than the apples. His findings supported his hypothesis. They did like
the jerky more than the apples. Way to good Sam!!
