SC Regions Research

Students worked in teams to research one of the six SC regions. Their goal is to become
an expert on the one region and share what they've learned with the class. After teams have presented on Monday, we will fill in a chart with the information on all six regions. Look for this chart in the SC Journal.

Here are some really nice looking South Carolinians getting ready to sing the Six Regions of South Carolina Song. We are still working on this so look for the video soon.

Gummy Bear Findings

After conducting our Gummy Bear Experiment, we found that some of our predictions were accurate but, many were not accurate. The solution of (vinegar only) broke the Gummy Bear down. Many students predicted this would happen because they had previous experiences with vinegar. Great job!
The baking soda and water solution seemed to make the Gummy Bear firmer and larger. The (water only) solution made the Gummy Bear increase in size the most. The salt water made the Gummy Bear break down but not as much as the vinegar solution. Students began to ask questions such as, "Why did the baking soda make the Gummy Bear firmer? ... and what caused the Gummy Bear to increase so much when it was added to water?"
This is what great scientists do, they keep asking questions and try new ideas to see what happens. All of this involves process skills such as observing, predicting, communicating, recording data, testing, and recording findings.
I hope your young scientist will come home and continue to ask questions and look for answers. Curiosity leads to knowledge.

Gummy Bear Science

Students used process skills to predict what may happen with the gummy bears. We placed a gummy bear in a cup of water, a cup of salt water, water with baking soda and a cup of vinegar. Students used their Science Journal to record their predictions. The next day we took a look at our gummy bears and recorded the results.

Third Grade Detectives

We have worked with place value for several days. For this activity, students worked with a partner to figure out the mystery of the "Jumbled Up Grade Book." This mystery centered around place value and using the clues to find the correct grade book scores. Students looked for the person with the most "changed" scores. The one with the most changed scores was the guilty one. He or she was responsible for jumbling up the grade book.
